Rocko’s modern life: The best cartoon ever.

My favourite cartoon is Rocko’s modern life. I really love this cartoon, because it was very different from the others. I remember that a few years ago, Nickelodeon channel showed very funny cartoons like, Real Monsters, Doug, Hey Arnold, and Cat Dog. When I was ten, I used to watch them all day long. Sometimes I watched it with my mother and my stepfather, because they liked it too.

I liked Rocko, because it wasn’t only for children. It was about a walabee – some kind of kangaroo- who worked in a comic store. He lived in his house with his silly dog called Spunky, and his best friends where a yellow cow adopted by a wolf family called Heffer, and the lonely nerd turtle, Filburt.

I remember a chapter when Filburt married with his dentist cat girlfriend and they had children. Some of the babies looked like Filburt, others like their mom. But one of them was a yellow cow. I couldn’t stop laughing.

The best thing about Rocko was that it showed the problems of many people in these days. Rocko was an inmigrant from Australia, and sometimes he had problems with his stay in the USA. He had a very mean boss who was very bad with him, and his neighbours, the Big Heads, where very similar to those typical neighbours than everyone hates. Ed Big Head was always trying to make imposible Rocko’s life, and his wife use to harass her shy neighbour.

Now, cartoons are not made for children and grownups. At this time, most of cartoons are about teen superheros, they are very noisy and full of action, and their sense of humour is too basic.

Finally, I have to thank to Rocko’s creators for showed children how their lives where going to be.

Writing blogs is like a therapy

This year I started to write a blog for the English class. At first, I didn’t want to, because writing against time had always been a little bit stressful for me considering that I’m going to be a journalist. However, when I began to publish my blog entries I felt that I was doing something very useful for my education and for my personal development.

I believe that writing blogs in a different language is a good strategy to learn, because while you are redacting a text you must think in that language, or at least, you must find out how to do it when you have more experience writing. When you write something in a blog, you want to communicate your ideas so in order to achieve the communication you have to learn vocabulary and grammar to express the ideas correctly. Besides, it makes you smarter. The reason of this is that when you speak another language you enter to a world different from yours, because languages create or define realities, that’s why learning another language opens minds.

Also, it has many advantages. One of them is that doing this activity you learn how to publish different contents in this platform, like text and pictures, which can be very useful in the future for someone who studies communication. Another benefit is that if you have to create information for academical reasons, and you must do it every week, this trains you to be constant in a process of knowledge. The most important, is that as you must write in class, the teacher is next to you for you to ask her your doubts.

Writing blogs helps to know you better. Many times my classmates and I had to write about ourselves, our experiences and expectations, the things that we like, and one time we had to write about someone whom we admired, etc. Sometimes, this activity was like a personal diary, like when we had to write about our future, other times it worked like a public place when we could express ourselves. Also, it helped to put in order memories, reflections, thoughts, and feelings too.

I enjoyed writing my blog in this class. It was very constructive, because I learnt a lot. Besides, I could get to know my classmates better by reading what they published, having the opportunity to see many different points of view. However, one of the things that I liked the most was perceived how my English got better with the time.

For journalism students like me, it is very productive to write periodically, because it allows you to think, rank, and redact the information quickly. In the future, I would like to keep writing a blog to share my opinions with other people and not to lose practice, until one day reach one of my goals, speak in English very well.

Crime

A few years ago, I was on Ahumada street walking to the subway. When I came down to the station a lady told me that a black jacket man had took something from my backpack. I turned back fast and I saw him. I took his shoulder and yelled at him and said "give me back my wallet and my lunch tickets!!!". He told me, in a very calm way, that he didn't took anything, that he was working and that he did have money. He let me check his pockets and I didn't found anything. He showed me his own wallet and it was full of money.

I knew he had stole my stuff, but I couldn't do anything about it, because thiefs who steal in places with a lot of people usually pass what they stole to their partners.

It's hard to say what is the reason of the incresing criminality. I don't know any stadistic that could assert that. Maby people thinks that because the media is always showing crimes in the news because most of people watchs it -or likes to watch it-.

If the criminality had increase or not, there is crime anyway and many citizens are afraid. In my opinion, I think that crime and violence are a product of poverty and exclusion. That's why the goverment should guarantee a top quality education to the entire society, and provide rehabilitation for those who had commit a crime.

Another kind of crime are murders and sexual crimes. Those are very
serious and have irreversible consequences. In spite of that, I don't think that capital punishment is a good mesure. Is true that it evites that the person who broke the law do it again, but at the same time if justice declares guilty an inocent person it becomes a disaster.

Capital punishment would reduce the violent crimes. In fact psychopaths can't be rehabilitate. I personally belive that any human been should kill another in any circunstance. Besides, why kill another person who did horrible things to other people if you can tourture him with his own thoughts by locking him for ever?

September 18th, my favourite festivity

My favourite festivity is the chilean independence celebration. It commemorates the first goverment meeting on september 18th on 1810. On this day, people eat chilean food and play traditional games such as fly kites, rayuela, and cacho.

This festivity is on the same date that my sister's birthday, so besides eating barbecue me and my family eat cake. On this hollyday, we usually invite some uncles and cousins to celebrate.

I like september 18th more than other festivities like new year, or christmas because I eat my favourite dishes. These are empanadas, choripanes and anticuchos. all made with meat. And don't forget the drinks like chicha or terremoto. This drink is made out of pineapple ice cream, a chilean wine called pipeño, and granadina.

Last year my boyfriend and I went to the O'Higgins Park fonda. A fonda is a place where people dance cueca, eat and drink a lot. We had so much fun watching all these drunk people laying on the floor, dancing and laughing that we want to come back this year.

The only thing that I have never done during this festivity is celebrate more than one day. I can't wait for that weekend.

My favourite piece of technology

A few weeks ago, I decided to buy a laptop. I didn't think that it would be necessary, but I wanted to have one anyway because it would be more comfortable than the traditional desk computer.

One day, I saw a very nice and cheap laptop on the internet, my dad gave me the money and I bought it. Once I get home with my new computer I became an addict. I have always like surfing in the web, but doing it while I am laying in my warm bed it's so different than before!

At first, my laptop was for making homeworks, write articles, read books, study, and all those things that people have to do at the university. Now I use it more to talk with my friends, read papers and magazines, listen to music, and watch videos everyday.

I like my laptop because it allows me to travel taking with me all the works that I have to do. Alsow it's wonderfull to be connected with the world everytime.

However, having a laptop has difficulties. One of them is that you have to be carefull with these objects, because they're expensive. The second problem is that if you don't have an internet connection it is very boring.

But the most important difficultie is that you have too many distractions. If you don't focus on what you really have to do -like studying, for example-, you could loose a lot of precious time for sleep.

Life would be so much difficult without my laptop... I couldn't work late at night, and I couldn't talk with my friends, or share videos and music. This technology object makes me really happy, but also consumes my time and energy.

My best friends

I met one of my best friends in my first day in a new school on second grade. I was six years old and I didn't knew anyone in my class. I sat down next to a dark hair girl called Natalia who was new at school just like me. We started talking and she became my best friend.

When we grew up, we met other people and we kept distant for a few years, but we still talking and seeing each other once in a while. In that time I started to hang out with a girl who also studied at my school and lived near to my house. Her name was Gabriela. It was very fun to go out with her, be cause we grew up toghether. We used to go to partys, dance, go shopping, cook weird foods, swim, met boys, and all those things that young girls do.

However, our friendship finished. When I was fifteen I met my boyfriend and a month after I move to a new house far away from her, so we stop talking.

After that, I started to go out with another girls of my class. One of them was Gabriela,-just like my other best friend- a short girl with curly hair, and we became friends. She is one of the most sensitive persons that I have ever met and we laugh a lot.

I have always thought that we met the best friends when we were kids. That's why two of my best friends are still being very close, but we can't see them very often be cause we are all studing at different universities.

Benedetti the great

Mario Benedetti is one of the most important writers of Latin America. He was born in Uruguay in 1920 and worked at newspapers and magazines for a long time until he was exiled in the 70’s from his country be cause of his political position. Then he lived in Buenos Aires, Lima and Spain where he kept writing. In his career he has wrote more than 80 novel s, short stories and poetry books. Sadly, he died two years ago after a long disease.

Some of his best books are “La Tregua”, “Gracias por el fuego”, “La borra del café”, “Despistes y Franquezas”, and my favourite one “Buzón de tiempo”.

Benedetti is one of my favourites writers be cause he creates characters who seem to have very normal lifes when they’re actually don’t, and he can transform any atmosphere in a beautiful experience.

When I read that he died I felt really sad for two reasons. The first one was that I lost my opportunity to meet a great human been and the second reason was that I lost someone who I could really understand, someone who I really appreciate. The truth is that I lost his company. That day I lost a friend.

My favourite vacations place

Last winter, I went with some friends to a very small town in south of Chile called Niebla. It is thirty minutes away from Valdivia by car and one of the most important Niebla's turistic attractions is the Niebla’s Fort built in 1671, and the Cruces river.

We stayed there for ten days for free, because one of us had friends who rented the house before we came and they were on vacations. Before we traveled, we bought a lot of food because in Niebla there are no supermarkets, and the few stores there are very expensive.

This place is quiet and cold. It could be a very boring town if you don't go there with some friends because the only entertaiment there is the beach. When we got bored of staring at each other faces all the time, we walked to the street market where the local people sell traditional chilean food like empanadas, chicha and local beer or took a bus to Valdivia where there were more things to do.

However, Niebla wouldn't be a more entertaining place if it had more places to go like restaurants or stores because it's a place to relax. I had a wonderfull time there. This was my best vacation ever.

My first earthquake

It was a beautiful night. I was at my boyfriend’s house and we just have went to bed. I was falling sleep when I heard a very sutil vibration from the window. Suddenly, the vibration became stronger. We realize that it was a tremor and we went down stairs to open the door before we couldn’t.

The floor started to move so violently that we scared. But it became worst. The street lights moved to both sides very fast, and when we looked to the sky we saw this very bright sparks that iluminated all. I didn't know what was happening, I thought it was the apocalypse.

My boyfriend held me tight and I cryed when I realize that my mom wasn't with me in that moment. I imagened my house collapsing with all my family inside. I wanted to see how my dad was, I wanted it to stop.

Finally, it did. I calmed down and I felt shame for my desperate cry. Then I went up stairs to get dress, but the tremor started again and my boyfriend thought that the house was damaged, so he didn't let me go.

I put my fahter in law's sweat shirt on and we went to see how the neighbors were. Then we took the car and drive to my boyfriend's uncles. They were fine, and I felt sad be cause I couldn't even talk with my family .

This is me...

My name is Fanny Ng. At present, I'm writing this blog for my english class. I don't know what to say be cause I feel a little bit forced to write about my self hahaha. So I'm going to start talking about things that I like.

I like to travel to unknown cities, spend time with my lovely boyfriend, hang out with my friends, read, watch weird movies, listen to british rock music and sleep. But the thing that I like the most is eat. One of my favorites foods are sushi and italian food. I also like to cook, but I don't have too much time so I only do it at weekends.

My life is not too interesting. Weekdays I go to university where I'm studying journalism (my cousin Jason who lives in San Francisco makes fun of me be cause he can`t belive that this carreer lasts 5 years. That makes me feel so embarrassed!). Monday to friday I wake up early in the morning and I come back home late at night. It's pretty sad, be cause I can't find the time to relax. Weekends are different. I stay at my boyfriend's house where we date and eat a lot.

I live in Santiago, I'm 20, and I have a gorgeous sausage dog called Oliver. Also I have a mom, a dad, 3 sisters, one step father, one step mother and 2 step brothers.
